BEFORE-THE-WORDS CHECK
To some, Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III would come across as a bit of a ‘red-neck,’ to others, he’s resourceful, but to Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III, he just doesn’t understand the concept of quitting.
‘There’s ten ways of doing everything’ is his motto, so he’s very often found at the source of solutions for many-a-Coddle-Popper with his varied assortment of tips and tricks (thus his nickname of ‘Tricksie’). If there’s an alternate way of doing anything, Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III is the Coddle-Popper who will work out what it is. Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III has compiled a weekly compendium of instances that (when needed), better ways were discovered (whether mental or physical), in the form of handy tips.
WHAT IT IS
Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III reveals that the ‘Before-the-Words’ Check invites us to clarify whether the communication problem is actually a problem to do with our words, or, a problem with how safe we feel.
WHY IT WORKS
Our ability to find the right words lessens when our nervous system feels threatened. Somehow, our thoughts become harder to organize, like as if our access to language narrows. We go blank, get defensive, shut down, or say things that we don’t really mean.
Coddle-Poppers refer to this phenomenon as ‘Brain-phartte.’ Brain-phartte occurs as a precursor to ‘nose-whistles.’ Oh Lordy, nose-whistles are a nasal occurrence brought on by overthinking, brain-ache, and/or an over-stimulated nervous system. (There are two different octave whistles, depending whether an inward or outward breath. Prolonged nose whistles eventually bring on non-fatal brain explosions that do not have any long-term harm for the Coddle-Popper), but I digress, and that’s another story, for another day.
Most of us have spent years trying to be better at communicating, when all along, the problem was that we lose access to our words when we’re under pressure! It wasn’t ‘vocabulary,’ the problem was our ‘CAPACITY.’
Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III suggests that by us understanding that difference, we’ll save ourself from a lot of self-blame and point ourself in the right direction toward what we really need.
HOW TO USE
- Step 1: Recognize the breakdown. We’re in a conversation, and we can’t find the words. (Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III says that we might go blank, get defensive, or shut down).
- Step 2: Evaluation question. Before trying to fix anything, let’s ask ourself: ‘Is it that I don’t know what to say, or, is it that I don’t feel safe enough to say it?’
- Step 3: Distinguish the problem. If we genuinely don’t know what to say, the solution might be clarification, preparation, or a different approach. Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III is keen to point out that if we don’t feel safe, then there’s no amount of perfect wording that’s going to solve it.
- Step 4: Address what’s REALLY needed. A ‘words’ problem might call for more preparation, or time to gather of our thoughts. A ‘safety’ problem might involve a pause, a different time and/or place, or (importantly), proof that the person can handle what we’re about to say without judgment.
- Step 5: Build the conditions (not just the skills). Instead of asking ‘Why can’t I communicate?’ Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III suggests that we’re better served when we ask ourselves, ‘What conditions help me communicate well?’
Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III wants us to understand that this particular shift deflects our focus away from personal failure, and moves it toward understanding what our nervous system NEEDS in order to stay present.
TOP TIP
‘Safety’ doesn’t always mean physical safety. No sir, it can also mean:
- Are they going to hear me or dismiss me?
- Can I speak without fear of being made wrong or to look a fool?
Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III is constantly amused that our nervous system always knows that answer before we do!
MORE FROM TERRENCE ‘TRICKSIE’ PIMPLETHWAITE III
Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III grew up in somewhat of a broken home. His father was overly partial to Coddle-berry wine and spent most of his time and money down at the local boozer. His poor ol’ Mom got by on a pittance and yet, all of her children wanted for nothing. They didn’t have much, but what they did have, they appreciated and learned to become VERY resourceful.
Terrence ‘Tricksie’ Pimplethwaite III missed a lot of school so that he could provide the shortfall in money needed in order to stay ahead of the bills, but that did not stop him from studying in the evenings by candlelight so as to still be able to make his grades.
Coddle-Poppers are wise enough to know that we are all unique parts of a puzzle, and if we encourage each other to shine, listen, learn and adventure into new ways of doing things, well, we may just find ‘interesting’ new ways of doing things. These ‘new nuggets’ of knowledge then lead us down other paths that we have never travelled before too (like the icing on the proverbial cake)! When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change!
The great thing about the Coddle-Popper way, is that it shifts us out of defending our limitations, and into exploring our possibilities (where the REAL change happens)!
We are each a ‘Spirit’ (part of Source/Creator/God, insert your own Divinity here) having a ‘Homo-Sapien’ experience. Our life on Earth is an encyclopedia of experiences laid out FOR us (by prior agreement), in order for us to LEARN and GROW. Through ‘Natural Law’, no Coddle-Popper, Spirit Guide, Faery, nor Angel are allowed to intervene on our behalf unless specifically asked or invited by us, for fear of karmic intervention.

IMPORTANT: Our mind is a magnet. When we think of blessings, we attract blessings. Likewise, when we think of problems we attract problems too. So we need to do our best to make sure to always have good thoughts and be positive.
