ASSUMPTION

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser is the Coddle-Popper who seems to have ‘been there, and done that’ more times than any other Coddle-Popper I know! At a ripe old age of 973, if there was a hard way of doing things, he’s tried it (Not too dis-similar to some of us humans), with the wrinkles on his brow to prove it!

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser and some of his buddies have compiled a compendium of ‘Stinking-Thinking’ instances where an easier way was found which he lovingly shares with us homosapiens with his monthly tips, in order to ease the emotional roller-coaster that we’re on. Today’s ‘Stinking-Thinking’ instance is about ‘ASSUMPTIONS’ and his longtime, old pal,  Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder.

ASSUMPTIONS

Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder is a strange little Coddle-Popper. There’s a saying about when we assume, of how it makes an ass/ (of) U (you)/ and me (ass/u/me). Now as much as Coddle-Poppers find immense shock-value and naughtiness in using ‘ass’ as a nickname, that would be a bit harsh (Coddle-Poppers may be coarse, but they’re not cruel), but ‘donkey,’ well that’s fair game. Not only is it the first three letters of both his first and last name, but ties in wonderfully with his incessant habit… to assume.

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser has noticed how (in everyday conversation), ‘I assumed you…(whatever)’ has become a lot more common and subsequently creates more and more problems.

To ‘assume’ seems harmless enough, but we need to remember that saying ‘I assumed you…(whatever)’ is a slippery slope when it comes to poor communication. Assumption turns a blind eye to observation, it bypasses enquiry, and (worst of all), it replaces truth with a liability (with the illusion of a shortcut). ‘I assumed you… (whatever)’ has sidelined proper conversation.

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser describes an ‘assumption’ as a belief accepted as truth (but without proof). Assumption is a mental shortcut that substitutes missing information with personal bias, past experiences, and/or subtle fears.

Occasionally assumptions can be useful (quick decision-making), but Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder’s assumptions are often inaccurate and unfair (especially regarding interpersonal relationships).

WHY WE MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

Both Coddle-Poppers and homosapiens are wired to look for patterns. When the brain finds itself with an incomplete picture, it tries to fill the gaps with PAST information. This might seem efficient, or even clever, but it is also dangerous. When Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder makes assumptions about other people, he often:

  • Overlooks important details
  • Fails to recognize personal growth/change
  • Reveals more about himself (Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder)  than the  assumed subject

The consequence? Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder suffers more misunderstandings, false accusations, and unnecessary conflicts than any other Coddle-Popper we know!

WHAT ‘I ASSUMED YOU…’ MEANS

When Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder says ‘I assumed you…(whatever)’ he very rarely describes the other person accurately. Instead, he usually reveals:

  •   The projection of his own fears
  •   His lack of willingness (or his own fear) to ask questions
  •   His NEED to maintain control of the narrative

In short, ‘I assume’ has become Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder’s  epitaph for ‘I didn’t ask’ and/or ‘I didn’t listen.’

THE COST OF ASSUMING

Assumptions damage communication because they create mixed roles:

  • The ‘assumer’ (Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder) inadvertently becomes positioned as the authority.
  • The other person unwittingly becomes a character in a script they didn’t write.
  • In relationships (personal/professional/societal), this leads to emotional distancing, mistrust, and disconnection.

    TOP TIP

So, the next time we lean towards making an assumption, let’s change our self-talk and think like a Coddle-Popper. Pause, take a breath, and swap out assumption with curiosity:

    •   Can I clarify something with you?
    •   What did you mean when you said…?
    •   Help me understand your perspective.

According to Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser, these small shifts encourage proper dialogue. They create space for truth, quirkiness, and respect.

      FINAL THOUGHT

Folks FAIL to realize that assumption can MISTAKENLY portray the ILLUSION of intelligence, but if Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder is anything to go by, the truth is often the opposite. Proper understanding requires listening, asking, and observing (not guessing). If we want better conversations, stronger relationships, and better insight into others, Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser suggests that we pension-off the phrase ‘I assumed you…(whatever)’ and replace it with something far more powerful: CURIOSITY.

We all know what they say about when we ‘assume…’ and Donald ‘Donkey’ Keyferpharr-Tinlowder would not want want any of us having a nickname like he has!

Coddle-Poppers are wise enough to  know that we are all unique parts of a puzzle, and if we encourage each other to shine, listen, learn and adventure into new ways of doing things, well, we may just find ‘interesting’ new ways of doing things. These ‘new nuggets’ of knowledge then lead us down other paths that we have never travelled before too (like the icing on the proverbial cake)! When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change!

The great thing about the Coddle-Popper way, is that it shifts us out of defending our limitations, and into exploring our possibilities (where the REAL change happens)!

      MORE FROM TOMMY ‘TOP-TIPS’ TINKLEHAUSSER

Yes sir, there’s well over twenty different ways that our thought process messes with our mind, and here’s a list of the who’s-who that we shall break down with this ‘Stinking-Thinking’ series. (Please check out this link: https://thefrequency.ca/stinking-thinking/)

Blaming, all or nothing thinking, catastrophizing, overgeneralization, mental filtering, jumping to conclusions, emotional reasoning, labeling and mislabeling, personalization, discounting positives, fortune telling, mind reading, always being right, negative filter, selective attention, false consensus effect, comparisons, what if” thinking, unrealistic standards, black-and-white thinking, self-blame, filtering, magnification, minimization, the fallacies of heaven’s reward, change, fairness, control and should.

My goodness, that’s quite the list isn’t it, so every month we will walk through them one at a time, so that we know what we’re looking for, and can do something about it as soon as we recognize it.

If we don’t, most of these will lead to unrealistic expectations/frustration/stress/disappointment and emotional distress… especially if we continue doing nothing about it.

      SUPERMAN

      DID YOU KNOW?

When we’re feeling nervous in high-pressure situations, adopting a ‘power pose’ for just two minutes can increase our confidence levels. Coddle-Popper research reveals that standing tall with our shoulders back and hands on our hips (or other expansive postures), triggers hormonal changes that reduce stress and boost confidence.

This works because our body language doesn’t just communicate to others, it also sends signals to our brain too. By physically taking up more space, we’re telling ourself that we deserve to be heard and noticed, and this creates a positive feedback loop between our posture and our mental state.

Try it before your next challenging situation, even if it’s just in a private space like a bathroom stall or empty elevator!

      ASSUMPTION

      5-SECOND RULE

      TOMMY ‘TOP-TIPS’ TINKLEHAUSSER’S WEEKLY TIP

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser is the Coddle-Popper who seems to have ‘been there-done that’ more times than any other Coddle-Popper. At a ripe old age of 973, if there was a hard way of doing things, he’s tried it (Not too dis-similar to some of us humans), with the wrinkles on his brow to prove it.

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser has compiled a compendium of cases where an easier way was found which he lovingly shares with us humans with his weekly tips in order to ease the emotional roller-coaster that we’re on.

Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser describes the 5-Second rule is a simple countdown technique where we count backward 5-4-3-2-1, and then spring into action on something we know that we need to get done. The reason behind this is because, when we feel an urge to act on a goal or task, we have exactly five seconds to get started before our brain begins its own agenda of poo-pooing the idea with excuses, overthinking, or fear. We shall come back and address this a little deeper in a moment.

In order to clarify any confusion, Coddle-Poppers also have a very different 5-Second rule that humans have unfortunately become rather more familiar with… It all started one ‘Harvest Festival’ (many moons ago), with a plate full of yummy fungal crunch bark clippings (a Coddle-Popper delicacy). Archibald Fennington-Choohardurr (renowned for his incessant habit of unusually slow eating), was often the catalyst for the impossible-to-contain frustration of the faster eating Coddle-Poppers. He would still have a tantalizing heaped plateful of mouth-watering fungal crunch bark clippings long after everyone else had not only finished, but long since licked their plates spotlessly clean in sheer desperation of the glorious smelling, ’look but don’t touch’ plate of Archibald Fennington-Choohardurr. If you think that a dog drools bad, just witness a table of fungal crunch bark clipping obsessed Coddle-Poppers with just the vainest of hopes that he might leave (or drop) some.

Coddle-Popper etiquette dictates that nobody can take from another’s plate without it being offered. That being said, should it just so happen for anything to fall off the plate and onto the floor… well, that’s fair game. But the unwritten rule is, that the original owner gets a 5 second head start in order to reclaim the said morsel.

Of course, Archibald Fennington-Choohardurr refuses to be distracted from his ‘culinary-moment,’ and maintains his concentration of savouring every single tantalizing mouthful. Being bothered to retrieve any wayward delicacy would be such an inconvenient distraction. He neither loses a chew, nor breaks rhythm, even when all hell breaks loose with the frenzy that occurs at the moment of the sixth second, with ten rambunctious Coddle-Poppers having a ruck (after the mandatory initial 5 seconds). Such is his savoured palate moment… but that’s another story for another day.

Getting back to the subject in hand, Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser highlights that our brain is wired to protect us from anything unfamiliar or uncomfortable. When we hesitate (even for a moment), our mind begins to flood itself with reasons/excuses NOT to act.

The 5-4-3-2-1 countdown interrupts this pattern by activating our prefrontal cortex (the part of our brain responsible for decision-making and intentional action), while bypassing the emotional brain (that triggers hesitation). It’s like piling on the brakes to our overthinking before it can get the opportunity to stop us. We apply it like this:

      • We pay attention to when there’s an impulse to do something productive (exercise, make a phone call, start that project).
      • When we feel it, we count backward (out loud or in our head): 5-4-3-2-1.
      • As soon as we hit 1, we make a start. Stand up, pick up the phone, open our laptop (whatever it is that begins the action).
      • We make sure NOT to give ourself time to change our mind. The physical movement is the secret sauce (it signals to our brain that we’re committed).

Coddle-Poppers use this first thing in the morning when the alarm goes off (we count down, then get up immediately)… Before the difficult conversation that we’ve been avoiding… When we need to disrupt worry spirals or negative self-talk… Any time that we catch ourself saying ‘I’ll do it later’ or ‘I don’t feel like it.’ It works especially well for simple things that we know we SHOULD do, but keep putting off.

Top tip: Start small with less important situations (to build confidence with the technique). Use it to put the phone down when scrolling, to drink water when thirsty, or to take a deep breath when stressed. Once trusting how well this works, start using it for the bigger challenges.

Emotional processes play a role in decision-making. This 5-Second Rule works because it doesn’t try to change how we feel; it works because it doesn’t give the feelings time to take over. According to Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser, disrupting automated thought patterns with a simple, deliberate action like counting, shifts our brain from ‘hesitation-mode’ into ‘action-mode’ (making it easier to overcome the inertia that keeps us stuck).

      Final Thought

According to Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser, the great thing about the adaption of the Coddle-Poppers, is that it shifts us out of defending our limitations, and into exploring our possibilities (where the REAL change happens)!

We are each a ‘Spirit’ (part of Source/Creator/God, insert your own Divinity here) having a ‘Human’ experience. Through ‘Natural Law’, no Coddle-Popper, Spirit Guide, Faery, nor Angel are allowed to intervene on our behalf unless specifically asked or invited by us, for fear of karmic intervention.

(To work around this, Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser is able to ‘suggest’ ideas through the power of meditation (as if it were our own thinking), so allow the suggestions to digest and percolate. It is intended as to tool to enhance our discernment skills. You’re welcome).

      WHY BOUNDARIES IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH

      Here’s Tommy ‘Top-Tips’ Tinklehausser’s with his weekly tip…

      WHY BOUNDARIES IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH

Boundaries are simply the limits, rules, or lines in the sand that we set for our own personal comfort/well-being. They’re are a set of guidelines that are both physical, and mental, that we create to protect ourself when we are around other people and in relationships.

Having healthy boundaries is an important skill. It helps us thrive and communicate our needs. It’s really important for us to set limits. This is so that others don’t take advantage or manipulate us. A person with strong personal boundaries feels comfortable saying ‘no,’ especially when they’re asked to do something that they’re not comfortable in doing. They also feel no need to apologize either.

Everyone’s boundaries are different, so once we set our own boundary, it  reveals to others how we expect them to behave around us and vice versa. Healthy boundaries are essential tools for safeguarding our mental health.

Psychologists (both human and Coddle-Popper), have discovered that when we set clear limits, we reduce stress, and increase our sense of self-worth. When we know our limits, we feel more in control of how we invest our time and energy. This sense of control lowers our anxiety and lessens the chance of burnout.

Maintaining boundaries helps us regulate our emotional responses. In deciding what we do, and do not, allow into our mental space (social media, toxic interactions), we create an environment where we can process emotions in a healthier way.

Neuroscientists have found a link between reduced stress and clearer decision-making. When we’re not constantly overwhelmed, our brains can switch more effectively into problem-solving mode, supporting productivity and motivation.

So there we have it, well-defined boundaries act like a mental immune system (they shield us from external stressors and at the same time, strengthen our resilience). How awesome is that!?

Boundaries may take a bit of courage and practice to set, but the mental health benefits are life-changing and lead to a calmer mind, stronger relationships, and a more sustainable sense of well-being.
